What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic practice derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body. These points are located along pathways called meridians, through which the body’s vital life energy, known as qi, flows.

In TCM, health is understood to depend on the smooth, unobstructed flow of qi throughout the body. Disruptions or blockages in this energy flow can result in physical pain, emotional issues, or illness. Acupuncture works to release blockages and restore the free flow of qi, thus supporting the body’s natural healing abilities and maintaining health.

Acupuncture treatment often includes complimentary treatments like moxibustion, which involves burning ai ye (Chinese herb) over acupuncture points to bring warmth to specific points. Heat lamps are used to relax muscles. Other therapies include cupping, gua sha, and massage therapy. Lifestyle practices and dietary suggestions may also be made to improve health.

What does Acupuncture feel like?

One of the most common questions people have about acupuncture is whether it hurts. The needles used in acupuncture are incredibly thin, so most people experience little to no discomfort. When the needles are inserted, you may feel a slight prick, a tingling sensation, or a sense of warmth or pressure around the needle site. These sensations are generally mild, and discomfort is minimal.

Many people find the experience relaxing.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of acupuncture sessions required depends on several factors, including the nature and severity of your condition, your overall health, and how your body responds to the treatment. While some people experience relief after just one session, most patients benefit from a series of treatments.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is a safe, well-established form of treatment when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. Certified acupuncturists adhere to strict safety standards and use sterile, single-use needles to minimize any risk of infection. The therapy is gentle and effective.
